Core modules plus advanced units
The Diploma includes all nine core TEFL modules:
- Welcome to the world of teaching English: what TEFL teachers do, the contexts you may teach in and the qualities of an effective English teacher.
- The history of methodologies: from grammar-translation and the direct method to audio-lingualism, the communicative approach and task-based learning, and why it matters in class.
- Language acquisition: how people learn a second language, the difference between learning and acquisition, and how to create conditions for real progress.
- English grammar: tenses, aspect, modals, conditionals and sentence structure explained from a teacher's point of view, with ways to present them clearly.
- Phonology: sounds, word stress, sentence stress, rhythm and intonation, and how to correct pronunciation helpfully.
- Vocabulary: choosing, presenting and recycling words and phrases so learners remember and use them.
- Lesson planning: setting aims, staging a lesson, timing, materials and adapting for different levels and ages.
- Drama and games: role plays, games and drama techniques that make practice meaningful and fun.
- The four skills: teaching reading, writing, speaking and listening with clear stages and tasks.
Advanced Grammar
The Advanced Grammar unit goes beyond the core module into areas learners find hardest: perfect and continuous aspects, modality, conditionals and mixed conditionals, passive and causative forms, reported speech and complex sentences. You learn to diagnose errors and explain them in simple language.
Advanced Phonetics
The Advanced Phonetics unit introduces the phonemic chart, connected speech, weak forms, linking and intonation patterns. It helps you teach pronunciation systematically and improves your own clarity, which is especially useful for non-native teachers and IELTS trainers.
