Module by module
The nine core modules build from understanding how English is learned to planning and teaching complete lessons:
- Welcome to the world of teaching English: what TEFL teachers do, the contexts you may teach in and the qualities of an effective English teacher.
- The history of methodologies: from grammar-translation and the direct method to audio-lingualism, the communicative approach and task-based learning, and why it matters in class.
- Language acquisition: how people learn a second language, the difference between learning and acquisition, and how to create conditions for real progress.
- English grammar: tenses, aspect, modals, conditionals and sentence structure explained from a teacher's point of view, with ways to present them clearly.
- Phonology: sounds, word stress, sentence stress, rhythm and intonation, and how to correct pronunciation helpfully.
- Vocabulary: choosing, presenting and recycling words and phrases so learners remember and use them.
- Lesson planning: setting aims, staging a lesson, timing, materials and adapting for different levels and ages.
- Drama and games: role plays, games and drama techniques that make practice meaningful and fun.
- The four skills: teaching reading, writing, speaking and listening with clear stages and tasks.
A typical week of study
Most learners study 6 to 8 hours a week and finish within four months. A typical week might be two evenings reading a module and making notes, one session on the module quiz, and a weekend session drafting a lesson plan or assignment. If you can give 10 to 15 hours a week, you can finish in six to eight weeks.

Frequently compared: online 120-hour TEFL vs CELTA
The 120-hour TEFL Certificate is flexible and affordable at US$185, and it is accepted by most language schools and online platforms. CELTA includes assessed teaching practice and costs much more; some UK and European schools require it. If your target employer does not ask for CELTA, the online TEFL meets the standard requirement.
